La Quinta, Riverside County
The Santa Rosa Mountains wrap around La Quinta on three sides. Along their base a pale band on the rocks marks the shoreline of ancient Lake Cahuilla, a vast freshwater lake that filled this end of the valley several centuries ago. The name survives at a county park on the south side of town, where a reservoir stores water from the Coachella Canal.
